This small but unique historical record provides a fascinating glimpse of towns and villages, their people and also the ferries that operated around the west coast of Scotland at the beginning of the last century.  From Campbeltown Pier up to Oban and Inveraray, the Isles of Arran and Bute, puffers on the Crinan Canal, early views of Ardrishaig, Craigendoran, Dunoon and Lamlash.  Also included are images of romantic and almost forgotten passenger steamers such as Lord of the Isles, Jupiter, Dandie Dinmont, Fairy Queen and King Edward along with some of the popular ferry terminals they visited. There are also a small selection of Edinburgh city centre photographs. All can be purchased as prints suitable for framing. See Below.

Today we all take pictures almost without thinking, especially in this age of easy point and click digital photography. Imagine though, what taking a photograph was like almost 100 years ago. Your camera the size of a large shoebox, heavy wooden tripod and a case of darkslides loaded with the then equivalent of 5x4 inch film which needed lengthy exposure times of a full second or more. It wasn't just simple snapping and it must have taken preparation, patience and dedication.

This collection comprises 177 remarkably well preserved halfplate black and white negatives, showing wonderful aspects of a bygone era. Click on the thumbnail images in the following pages to see larger images.
